In-Person on Oahu

How in-person sessions work

I come to you — a library, a coffee shop, or wherever works best. Same rate as online, no extra fees. Here's exactly how travel time fits into your session, so there are no surprises.

For in-person sessions, your booked time is when I leave to come to you — not when we start tutoring — and it includes my drive back. There's no travel fee and no higher rate. To be upfront, the tradeoff is time, not money: you pay the same either way, but travel comes out of your booked block. Everything below shows exactly how that shakes out.

A booked in-person block looks like this:
Drive out
Tutoring
Drive back

Closer to town means less drive time and more tutoring — and when I have students back-to-back at one spot, the travel can shrink to nothing. See real examples ↓

Same Rate as Online

In-person costs exactly what online costs. No premium, no separate travel fee, no surcharge — ever.

The Clock Starts When I Leave

Your booked time is when I head out to meet you — not when we start tutoring — and it includes the drive back.

You Choose Where We Meet

Closer to town means less travel and more tutoring. You're always in control of that trade-off.

Why There's No Travel Fee — and How the Time Works

I don't charge extra for coming to you. Instead, the clock starts when I leave to come to you.

I keep one rate for everything, online or in person. To do that without adding a travel fee, your booked block covers the whole trip. It's the same idea as a house-call — you're booking the visit door to door, not just the minutes we're sitting together.

I head out
at your start time
We tutor
the main block
I drive back
the tail end

So a 1:00 session means 1:00 is when I head out the door — not the moment we start tutoring.

A reliable, predictable slot

I'm never late to you because a prior session ran long, and never cutting your time short to rush off to someone else.

Stacked sessions = more tutoring

When I have another student at the same spot right before or after you, that side has no travel at all — I'm already there. I actively try to line these up.

How much of the block is travel depends entirely on where we meet — a few minutes close to town, more farther out. That part is your call, and the examples below lay it out plainly.

So if I arrive a few minutes after our start time, I'm not running late — those minutes are the drive out, which your block already accounts for. I leave right at the booked time, sometimes earlier when my schedule allows.

What This Looks Like in Practice

Four common setups, start to finish. I'm based in the Liliha-Kapālama area, so these use my actual drive times — and the last two show how stacking sessions gives you more time.

Close to Town

Example spot: Liliha Public Library · about 5–10 minutes from me

You book 2 hours2:00 total
~5–10m
Tutoring
~5–10m

Travel  ·  Tutoring

A 2-hour booking gives you roughly 1 hour and 40 minutes of tutoring. A close-in spot still takes a few minutes each way — parking, walking in, getting set up — but you get nearly all of your time at the table.

Windward Side

Example spot: Starbucks, Kailua Town · about 25 minutes from me

You book 2 hours2:00 total
~25m
Tutoring
~25m

Travel  ·  Tutoring

A 2-hour booking over in Kailua gives you around 1 hour and 10 minutes of tutoring, since the Pali drive runs about 25 minutes each way. Totally fine if you'd rather I come to you — but worth knowing before you book.

Another Student After You

Example spot: Starbucks, N. School St · when I'm staying on for a session right after yours

You book 2 hours2:00 total
~5–10m
Tutoring

Travel  ·  Tutoring

Because I'm staying put for the next student, there's no drive-back to account for on your end — you get about 1 hour and 50 minutes of tutoring. The tail end of your block goes to teaching instead of my commute.

Students Before & After You

Example spot: Starbucks, N. School St · when you're booked between two other sessions

You book 2 hours2:00 total
Tutoring — full block

Tutoring

I'm already on-site and staying on afterward, so there's no travel to account for on either side. A 2-hour booking is a full 2 hours of tutoring — the best-case setup, and exactly why I try to group nearby students together.

These are typical estimates — actual drive time shifts a little with traffic and the exact spot. Stacked sessions depend on my schedule that day, so they're never guaranteed, but I always try to line them up. I'm glad to give you a straight estimate for your location before we lock anything in.

Farther out? You have options.

If you're on the windward or leeward side and want more of your block spent actually tutoring, we can meet somewhere closer to town — that's always on the table, and weekends tend to be easiest for it. Plenty of students also start in-person and shift to online once we've got a rhythm going, which removes travel from the equation entirely. Whatever keeps the most time on your goals.

Common Questions

Do in-person sessions cost more than online?

No. The rate is identical, and there's no travel fee or surcharge. The only difference is that your booked block includes my round-trip travel, which online sessions don't have.

So if you arrive a few minutes after our start time, am I losing tutoring time?

That arrival time is the travel window, which is already accounted for in how the block is set up — it isn't me running behind. On a close-in session it's only a few minutes. If you'd like more time at the table, meeting closer to town or going online is the lever.

Can travel time ever be reduced or skipped?

Sometimes, yes. If I have another student near you right before or after your session, I can often reduce or even eliminate the travel time for one or both of you. It depends on the day's schedule and geography, so it's never guaranteed — but I always try.

Where exactly do you meet students?

Coffee shops and cafés are the most common, libraries are a close second, and I can come to your home if that's easier. For students farther out, meeting somewhere in between — usually closer to town — is a good way to keep more of the session on tutoring.

How do I know the travel time for my area?

My tutoring locations page lists the areas I serve with rough drive times, so that's a good starting point for a ballpark. For an exact estimate, just ask — before we book anything, I'm happy to tell you what your session will look like for your specific spot.
