Taylor Berukoff — founder of Oahu Prep

Meet Your Tutor

I'm Taylor Berukoff.

I'm the only tutor at Oahu Prep — when you hire me, you get me. Every session, every time. I get to know how each student thinks, what frustrates them, and what actually works. That consistency is what makes the difference.

I have a math degree, a background working as a data analyst and software engineer on the U.S. Navy's Aegis Defense System, and 10+ years of tutoring experience — but what matters most is that I've been exactly where you are. My story is below, and it's the reason I do this work.

Don't Take My Word for It

"

Taylor is an exceptional tutor that goes the extra mile to make sure his students are prepared. My son has ADHD and Taylor's patience was appreciated and kept my son engaged.

"

We were desperate to find help for our son. We found Taylor and our son has improved comprehension with just 1 hour a week. Taylor's method is comfortable, patient, clear, and positive.

"

I've had many tutors before and each one left me feeling like I wasted my time and money. Taylor is by far the most professional tutor I've had — he keeps me accountable and on track.

My Approach to Tutoring

I start by listening — really listening.

Every student who sits down with me is a different puzzle. I watch how they work through problems, ask them what makes sense and what doesn't, and have real conversations about where they're getting stuck. Before I teach anything, I need to understand how they think, so I can find the gaps and carefully fill them in with methods and explanations that actually land.

I'm not a teacher. I don't grade, I don't judge. If you fail, I've failed.

That's fundamentally different from a classroom, where one teacher repeats the same material to thirty students who each have different challenges, interests, and energy levels. I provide support and guidance — that's it. And because you always work with me, not a rotating roster, I learn how each student thinks and I adjust every session accordingly.

I try to give students something harder to teach: motivation.

I share examples of others who've succeeded after similar struggles, and I help them see why the material matters — whether it's practical, or whether mastering it is simply about building the character and logical thinking skills that come from pushing through something difficult.

What keeps me in this work is the people.

Every week is a new set of interesting challenges. I get to meet families from all over the island, be a small part of their lives, and help their kids succeed where they might otherwise have been left behind. The kindness and gratitude I get back from these families is something I never take for granted.

How Hard Work Pays Off

From nearly failing high school math to a career built on it.

I asked the same thing.

When students ask me "why does any of this matter?" — I get it. Here's what I can tell them now: learning to think logically and solve hard problems changed the entire shape of my life. It allowed me to understand the world better, to become a more capable and helpful person, and to build a life on my own terms.

I can't make it appear on a canvas — but I can make it come to life on a screen.

I'm not artistically gifted — I can't see something in my head and draw it. But I can see something in my head and build it. Video games, puzzles, websites, home servers. I built this business, moved my family across the world to an island paradise, and I get to be a full-time dad and a full-time educator at the same time.

It all started with learning how to learn — and refusing to quit when it was hard.

I'm independent. I don't have to rely on the goodwill of companies for web hosting, or streaming services, or someone else to build me a beautiful website. I can communicate clearly, argue in good faith, break down complex problems of all kinds, and understand the people around me. And now I get to guide others in doing the same.

Taylor and his wife on the beach in Oahu

Off the Clock

Oahu Prep is family-owned — me, my wife, our son, and our Maltese-Yorkie, Zola. I gravitate toward things that are challenging, engaging, and bring people together — things that keep us active and healthy.

Surfing with my wife
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Guitar for my son
Building games & websites
Puzzles & board games

During the day, my son and I explore the island together — hikes, beaches, goat farms, egg stands, farmers markets, botanical gardens, lighthouse views, and quiet parks. It's a pretty good office commute.

I moved to Oahu from California, where I ran a similar tutoring business called OC Prep. Same approach, new island, better waves.

Meet Zola

Zola is our Maltese-Yorkie and Oahu Prep's unofficial morale officer. She sits in on most online sessions — usually asleep in her bed right next to my desk. Students love her. She has never once helped anyone solve a calculus problem, but she keeps the vibes immaculate.
